Protesters gathered on the steps of the Alberta Legislature in Edmonton and Calgary Courts Centre on Monday to demand Three Hills' controversial Guzoo Animal Farm to be shut down.
Organized by the Council of Concerned Albertans for Animal Welfare and Public Safety (CCAAWPS), protesters held signs that read "Support Guzoo? You support animal torture," and "Blood, filth and death, the real Guzoo."
"We want the Alberta Government to do their job and oversee the zoo. It is a zoo, not a farm, so it is held by the zoo standards. The last report that was put out, [owner Lynn Gustafson] had missed all 108 and yet he’s open," said CCAAWPS member Sylvia Meier to 660News.
Guzoo has been the focus of animal-abuse concerns since it opened in 1990. In March 2011 photos of a goat with its face covered in blood were posted on Facebook. The zoo has for years been the subject of animal abuse complaints from animal welfare groups and the public.
The Alberta government ordered Guzoo shut down in 2011 over concerns about animal care, but later reversed its decision.
The province granted the zoo a new one-year operating licence in April.
