WATCH: Divers Narrowly Escape Being SWALLOWED

A pair of divers off the coast of central California seem to have narrowly avoided slipping down the gaping maws of humpback whales.

While the gentle giants are known for mulching plankton and little fish, this startling video appears to capture a close encounter of the culinary kind.

With a crew member filming from the boat's deck, the divers are a little more than surprised to see a pair of gaping mouths breach the water's surface -- mere inches from their position.

If the divers did manage to fall into those mighty mouths, it's likely they weren't exactly what the whales ordered. Earlier underwater footage taken at the scene, reveals a cloud of small fish jetting towards the camera.

Little consolation for the breathless humans, scampering to get back on the boat.

"You’re going to have to do more to clean that wetsuit,” a crew member jokes in the video.
