The Calgary man who was charged with threatening two Crown prosecutors is the same man who championed the Occupy Calgary movement.
Ben Christensen, 27, was arrested and charged with six counts after he allegedly tried to have two prosecutors drop charges against an admitted child molester, reports the Calgary Sun.
According to Global News, Christensen tried to get prosecutors to drop charges against Derrick Justin Frank.
Frank, 32, was sentenced last week for molesting and luring a 14-year-old boy and possessing and accessing child porn.
Frank was a fellow Occupy Calgary protester, although police say the relationship between the two men is not known.
The Crown’s office in Calgary reported in March that it had received an email containing threats.
“I’m not going to identify the specific nature of the threat, just that it was targeted and overt,” Staff Sgt. Harv Davies said at a news conference Tuesday.
Christensen, who was arrested by Lethbridge Regional Police last Friday, worked as litigation advisor for the Occupy Calgary group in the fall of 2011 when the City of Calgary ordered an end to the group’s encampment at Olympic Plaza.
Christensen was unsuccessful and the group was ultimately ordered out.
He also tried to run in the Calgary Centre byelection last year for the Progressive Canadian Party, reports CBC Calgary.
Christensen faces two charges each of extortion, uttering threats and intimidation.
According to Global News, Christensen is being held on $10,000 bail. So far, no one has posted the money for his release.
