A teenager had reportedly been saved from drowning in the waters near the Brazilian city of Recife - only to be attacked and killed by a shark.
While swimming with her cousin at Boa Viagem beach, Bruna Gobbi, 18, found herself drowning, according to CNN. Rescuers were dispatched and, according to the news site, had already begun reeling the woman in, when a shark clamped down on her leg.
A video captured of the rescue and attack posted on YouTube showed people coming to her aid. (Warning that video above shows what appears to be blood in the water.)
While the rescue team did manage to get Gobbi to a hospital, she died later that night, Agence France-Presse reports.
"The rescuers came in a matter of five minutes, but to us it felt like five years," Gobbi's cousin, Daniele Gobbi, told Globo TV.
Since 1992, 57 people have died from shark attacks off of Recife's coast, CNN reports. About 40 per cent of those attacks occurred at Boa Viagem beach.
According to National Geographic, there are between 50 and 70 worldwide shark attacks annually -- a number that is going up, mainly because more humans are flocking to coastal waters. On the other hand, recent reports peg the number of sharks killed annually to around 100 million -- with devastating consequences on the overall population.
