A Calgary day home operator arrested and charged with second degree murder in the death of a child under her care, has been granted bail.
Caitlin Jarosz, accused of killing 22-month-old MacKenzy Woolfsmith while at her McKenzie Towne day home in May 2012, was granted $10,000 bail Wednesday morning.
Court heard that despite the severity of the charge, Jaroz was a suitable candidate for bail, The Calgary Sun reports.
“Ms. Jarosz is charged with second-degree murder... but she has no previous record,” Crown prosecutor Shane Parker is reported by the Sun as saying.
“The Crown is satisfied she can be released on the conditions the defence and the Crown is proposing,” he said, of the agreement between himself and defence lawyer Alain Hepner.
An investigation concluded Woolfsmith died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head.
Hepner told the Calgary Herald an immense amount of details had to be ironed out before his client was released on $10,000 bail.
“We had to iron out residency requirements, where she’s going to be, where she’s going to work, her employment and educational plan," he said, adding his client has not given any indication she won't fulfill her bail conditions.
"She has not left the jurisdiction, she has always been available if police wanted to speak to her. She’s not a flight risk, she has no criminal record, she has a residence and a great deal of support from family,” he told the Herald.
According to the CBC, Jarosz is due back in court in August and is not allowed to be around children under the age of 14.
