Dog Shot Near Nanaimo After Attacking Goats

A man in Nanaimo, B.C., was briefly taken into custody as Mounties in that Vancouver Island city worried violence might flare after a dog was shot.

The incident occurred Sunday evening in the rural community of Cedar, southeast of Nanaimo, when the 13-year-old dog was shot once in the chest by a neighbour.

The farmer who fired the shot said the dog was in his yard, attacking one of his goats.

Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O'Brien confirmed the goat owner was was justified in discharging a firearm to stop an attack on one of his animals.

But the man responsible for the dog argued it got into the yard through a hole in the fence, and the farmer showed no remorse for the shooting.

O'Brien says the dog owner spent the night in the police lockup to ensure there was no retaliation. (CKWV)
