TIFF 2013: Andre 3000's Jimi Hendrix And Paul Potts Biopics Lead Toronto Film Festival's Music Movies

TIFF 2013 Premieres Jimi Hendrix, Paul Potts Biopics

The Toronto International Film Festival has announced the first batch of films that will be screening at the 2013 edition of the September fest, including a number of high-profile music films like the much-anticipated Jimi Hendrix biopic staring Andre 3000

"All Is By My Side," the controversial picture about the life of legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix, will finally receive its World Premiere at TIFF 2013. While it won’t feature any of the artist's songs, because it famously failed to receive permission from the Hendrix estate last year, it does promise a number of Beatles and Muddy Waters covers from the Outkast rapper, actor, and razor pitchman Andre "3000" Benjamin.

On the other end of the British music spectrum, "Britain’s Got Talent" winner and YouTube sensation Paul Potts will also receive the biopic treatment in "One Chance." BAFTA winner (and dad of Stormageddon to "Doctor Who" fans) James Cordon will play the shop keeper turned popera superstar.

Comedian and lifelong rock and roll fan Mike Myers contributes to the musical fare with debut "Supermench: The Legend of Shep Gordon." Myer’s directorial debut profiles the man who held him over a barrel when he was trying to secure the rights to use an Alice Cooper song for "Wayne’s World."

Musicians Adam Levine and yasiin bey (aka Mos Def) both have high profile roles in films at the festival. Levine, the frontman for Maroon 5, plays a no good musician who dumps Keira Knightley and sends her on a journey of self and musical discovery while yasiin bey plays a small-time criminal who kidnaps Jennifer Aniston in the closing night film "Life Of Crime."

Music itself plays a role in couple of other films that were announced, as well. "We Are The Best!" tells the story of a group of teen girls who form a punk band in Stockholm in 1982 and Tom Hiddleston plays an underground musician (and vampire!) in "Only Lovers Left Alive."

TIFF will reveal the rest of its lineup in the coming weeks, and we're expecting another heap of sonic-related spectacles then, so stay tuned for more information.

The 38th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 5-15. For more info, visit TIFF.net.
