Woman Killed In Early Morning Attack On St-Laurent

A 38-year-old man is in custody after a fatal attack on a woman on a city street early Monday morning.

Montreal police said the incident started when a man was kicked out of a bar near the intersection of Ste-Catherine Street and St-Laurent Boulevard for being too aggressive.

Const. Daniel Lacoursière said the man tried to hit several pedestrians before targeting a 67-year-old woman across the street.

“According to witnesses, it seems that the suspect hit her [first] in the upper body,” he said. “The woman fell to the ground. He continued to hit the woman, particularly in the head.”

Witnesses intervened to stop the attack.

Police arrived on scene a short time later and arrested a 38-year-old man. He is still being questioned.

The woman was taken to hospital, but she died just after 4 a.m.

Lacoursière said the suspect is known to police.

This is the 16th homicide on Montreal police territory in 2013.
