Princess Diana Covers Vanity Fair September 2013 Issue (PHOTO)

LOOK: Princess Diana's Beautiful Magazine Cover

Even though she died almost 16 years ago, Princess Diana still fascinates us today.

The late Princess of Wales covers Vanity Fair's 2013 September issue, with a photo shot by famed fashion photographer Mario Testino in 1997, which was the last major photo shoot Diana had before her untimely death. (Fun fact: Testino also photographed Di's son Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton for their engagement shoot in 2010).

The magazine issue comes at a poignant time for the royal family; the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed their first son, Prince George Alexander Louis, last week and Kate even gave a subtle nod to her late mother-in-law by wearing a similar polka-dot dress while presenting the royal baby to the world.

However, the Vanity Fair story doesn't focus on Prince George. In fact, it concentrates on the secret love affair Princess Di had with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan from 1995 to 1997, before she started her relationship with Dodi Al Fayed.

The cover photo shows a close-up of Diana, who was 36 at the time just before her death in August 1997, with her shoulders bare, makeup at a minimum and short blond hair tousled. The pic really shows just how much her two boys look like their mum.

CORRECTION: This article initially referred to Princess Diana as Kate Middleton's grandmother-in-law. In fact, Diana would have been Kate's mother-in-law.
