Suspect charged with 2nd-degree murder in random beating

A 38-year-old man was charged today with second-degree murder after a woman was beaten to death early Monday morning.

Jason Derrald Sivret is charged in connection with Montreal’s 16th homicide of the year.

The 67-year-old victim, Yuk Ngor Tam, was crossing the street when she was attacked and hit multiple times in the head by the suspect, according to witnesses.

Police said the incident started when the man was kicked out of a nearby bar for being too aggressive.

Witnesses intervened to stop the seemingly random attack, but the woman died in hospital shortly after 4 a.m.

Police said the suspect is known to police.

Sivret’s next court date is set for Sept. 11.
