BronyCAN, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Fan Convention Coming To Richmond, B.C.

Bronies everywhere: your wishes have been answered. The first ever BronyCAN fan convention, celebrating "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic" (MLP:FiM), is coming to Richmond. B.C. next month.

A Brony - for those of you who haven't been keeping up - is a fan specifically of the "MLP:FiM" franchise, and usually refers to the teenage and adult males who love the show.

Events currently listed for the August 24-25 BronyCAN include a "Ponyville Idol" contest, a pajama party and various panels featuring voice actors, writers and musicians on the show.

A BronyCON held in New Jersey in 2012 saw 4,000 fans show up, many bedecked in costumes inspired by the show, Associated Press reported.

The show's animator, Lauren Faust, told AP she never expected the show, created with little girls in mind, would prove a hit with men and boys, but that there was nothing weird about it.

"There are a lot of people who when they first hear about men watching a show for little girls, they're taken to a creepy place," she said.

In August last year, Jerry Springer took to Twitter to drum up Bronies for his show:

The tweet was clearly suggesting the show was going to explore the erotic side of Bronyism, The Daily Dot Reported, noting that voice actress Tara Strong, who plays Twilight Sparkle in the show, jumped on Twitter to urge fans not to take part:

Despite the occasional raised eyebrow at the thought of a grown man obsessing over cute cartoon ponies with big eyes, Bronies say they are really all about the show's values of friendship, love and tolerance, and have even launched their own non-profit, The Brony Thank You Fund.

The fund was born after an Indigogo campaign designed to raise enough money to create an ad to thank all those involved in the production of MLP:FiM drew a huge number of donations.
