Taste Canada announces shortlist for culinary book awards set for November

TORONTO - Taste Canada has announced a short list for its annual food writing awards that reflects the remarkable versatility of Canadian writers.

Winners of the awards, formerly known as the Canadian Culinary Book Awards, will be announced on Nov. 4 in Toronto at a gala hosted by Stefano Faita of CBC-TV's "In the Kitchen."

The annual awards recognize and celebrate writing and publishing throughout Canada's English and French culinary world.

The short list, narrowed down from 64 submissions published in 2012, follows.

Culinary Narratives:

— "Canadian Whisky: The Portable Expert" by Davin de Kergommeaux (McClelland & Stewart).

— "French Kids Eat Everything (And Yours Can Too)" by Karen Le Billon (HarperCollins Publishers).

— "Menu Confidential: Conquer the Calories, Sodium and Fat Hiding in the Foods You Love" by Megan Ogilvie (HarperCollins Publishers).

General Cookbooks:

— "Lynn Crawford's Pitchin' In: More Than 100 Great Recipes from Simple Ingredients" by Lynn Crawford (Penguin).

— "Canada's Favourite Recipes" by Rose Murray and Elizabeth Baird (Whitecap Books).

— "Fast Flavours: 110 Simple Speedy Recipes" by Michael Smith (Penguin).

— "Soupesoup a la maison" by Caroline Dumas (Flammarion Quebec).

— "A la bonne franquette" edited by Lynne Faubert (Les Editions Transcontinental).
