Newfoundland works minister tours flooded areas of Burin Peninsula

MARYSTOWN, N.L. - Newfoundland and Labrador's transportation and works minister says his department will make a full assessment of the damage caused by a weekend rain storm on the Burin Peninsula before deciding on permanent repairs.

Paul Davis toured the affected areas with local members of the legislature on Monday.

Davis says it's difficult to design and construct infrastructure to cope with excessive flooding.

He says a man in Lords Cove told him an unofficial measurement in that community calculated up to 70 millimetres of rain fell in one hour, something Davis says is next to impossible to guard against.

The community of Marystown was especially hard hit.

Floodwaters dislodged the town's culverts and left some residents temporarily stranded.
