Toddler day home death prompts investigation

Police in Brooks, Alta. are investigating the sudden death of a toddler in a day home.

Police and emergency responders arrived on Monday at 3:35 p.m., after the day home operator called for help. The 18-month-old girl was not breathing and unresponsive.

Emergency workers tried to revive the child, but couldn’t.

Brooks RCMP and the Calgary medical examiner's officer are investigating the child's death, with the day home operator co-operting fully, said Sgt. Raimo Lowe of the Brooks RCMP.

"At this time nothing appeared to be of an injury nature," he said.

The child appeared to be healthy before this incident, he said.

Police described the day home as a child care operation in a residence in Brooks. It’s not registered with the provincial government and the operator cared for several children.

Brooks is located about 160 kilometres southeast of Calgary.
