Jennifer Lawrence's 16 Style Mishaps: 'Catching Fire' Star Wasn't Always So Perfect (PHOTOS)

Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t always a style icon.

"The Hunger Games" star has worn some getups in her early days that would make Anna Wintour want to revoke Lawrence’s latest fashion feat – the coveted September cover of American Vogue. What a nice early birthday present for the actress who turns 23 on Thursday!

The "Catching Fire" actress has been heavily featured on best dressed lists since she became a star in the Oscar-nominated "Winter's Bone" and we’re on board with (most of) her style choices.

Nicholas Hoult's maybe-girlfriend knocked it out of the park at not one but two Oscars: In a pale pink Dior Couture gown by Raf Simons at this year's ceremony (where she picked up her golden statue for "Silver Linings Playbook") and a red Calvin Klein tank dress that won our hearts in 2011.

At less formal award shows like the 2013 Independent Spirit Awards, the goofy actress traded in her ball gown for an equally stunning black Lanvin halter-neck dress that showed off a hint of sideboob. How risqué!

That said, the path to becoming a style icon doesn’t come without a few missteps and a mistake isn’t a mistake without looking back and learning from it. Lawrence had a particularly bad year in fashion in 2008 but we’re sure she would be the first to admit it with a self-deprecating humour that has become so characteristically J.Law.

As our fantasy best friend enters a new year with awards and accolades bursting out of her Miss Dior handbag, we look back on Jenn's humbler days when it seemed appropriate to wear flats and prom-inspired tendrils at a movie premiere.

Let's take a look at some of Jenn's fashion mistakes:
