'A Day In Gimli': Video Paints Town As A Peaceful Paradise

It's no secret that we love our time-lapses of major cities.

But there's something to be said about an escape from the city to somewhere quiet. Paradise has a different meaning depending who you ask, but this video of a day in Gimli, Man., fits ours.

Lush green hills? Check.

Fluffy white clouds? Check.

Clear blue waters? Check, check and check!

Now there's a good chance that unless you're a lover of Icelandic culture or Lord of the Rings fan, you've never heard of Gimli. The town of under 6,000 people is located on the west side of Lake Winnipeg, a 70-minute drive from the province's capital.

But the seemingly quaint isn't always as peaceful as the video would suggest.

Once every August, the town hosts the Icelandic Festival of Manitoba, a celebration of all things Viking culture. This year's festivities brought out around 40,000 people, according to CBC, who witnessed fun, food and even a demonstration of Viking warfare and tactics using traditional shields and spears.

It's hardly the paradise the video makes it out to be but whether visitors are finding their inner Leif Ericson or their inner peace, Gimli is best summed up by one Reddit user who came across the video: "beautiful town, beautiful video".

We couldn't agree more.
