Coco Chanel, that grande dame of the little black jacket, would have turned 130 years old on Monday and even though the Parisian designer has been dead since 1971, her influence on fashion is still felt today.
Gabrielle "Coco" Bonheur Chanel, born in 1883, changed women's lives forever when she freed them from oppressive corsets and zipped them up in flowing, jersey sportswear. For the first time, women were really able to move as they wished!
But Chanel's influence extended beyond clothing. The famous interlocking Cs are stamped on everything from the popular quilted 2.55 purse, tweed jackets and the iconic Chanel No. 5 perfume, which Marilyn Monroe had famously said to have worn to bed, sans clothes.
The notorious perfectionist's label experienced a revival when German designer Karl Lagerfeld, he of the cravat and powdered white hair, took over as creative director in 1983, and his designs have been worn on models, European and Middle Eastern royalty and celebrities du jour.
Chanel bags have become so popular, that counterfeits come in easy supply and dozens of videos and websites are dedicated to helping Chanel shoppers spot a fake.
We're sure Mademoiselle would be amused and pleased at how much her label has grown.
So, in honour of Coco's birthday, we take a look at some of the most hilarious and wise words she has said about fashion.
