Police in Michigan have arrested a Canadian scuba diver who they say was found trying to smuggle marijuana across the St. Clair River.
The man was found with almost 4 kg of pot (about 8 lbs) in a watertight PVC pipe (pictured below). He was spotted by a boater at around 1:00 a.m. Monday night, who then informed authorities.
"Our camera operators were able to locate the individual with night-vision cameras," U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Kris Grogan told the CBC.
He was picked up near Marine City, Michigan, about 40 km south of Sarnia, Ont.
Grogan told the London Free-Press that swimming the river isn't exactly a safe activity. “If there’s a freighter coming through there, there’s no way for a freighter to stop. That’s a very, very dangerous thing to do," he said.
The drugs have an estimated street value of around $40,000, according to the Windsor Star. The diver will face charges and has been turned over to the St. Clair County Drug Task Force.
In late July, a Windsor man was arrested after drunkenly swimming across the river into Detroit.
