Otto Jelinek has been named Canada's ambassador to the Czech Republic.
Jelinek was a world championship figure skater, winning the 1962 pairs title with his sister Maria.
He was elected to Parliament in 1972 and held portfolios in Mulroney's government that included amateur sport, supply and services and national revenue.
Jelinek left politics in 1993 and moved to the Czech Republic in 1996, when he became chairman of Deloitte Czech Republic.
Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird announced Jelinek's appointment in a news release Friday along with a number of other diplomatic postings.
The other appointments included naming Marie Gervais-Vidricaire, a former ambassador to Austria, as Canada's ambassador to Germany and veteran public servant John Kur as ambassador to Russia.
Jelinek spent a decade in Europe before moving to back to Canada in 2007.
