A Calgary puppy was recently euthanized after it found to have rabies.
The dog was brought by its owners from Nunavut, reports CBC News, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency was contacted after the dog was taken to a veterinarian.
Dr. David Strong, a medical health officer with Alberta Health Services, told the Calgary Herald there is no risk to the public or other pets as the dog was still very young and did not spend any time outside.
However, Sun News is reporting 16 people who may have been in contact with the puppy have been given preventative shots.
Strong told the Sun rabies is rarely found in humans and animals in Alberta, and most pets are vaccinated against it.
Rabies is most commonly transmitted through a bite or lick to an open wound.
According to the Sun, the last documented case of rabies in Alberta was in 2007.
"We really encourage people to have their pets immunized because it does provide very good protection," Strong told the Herald.
