Monday's 10-1 vote came after the provincial finance minister wrote a letter to Ottawa's mayor saying the province will not support the creation of a second gaming zone in the city — something the city had been considering.
Finance Minister Charles Sousa says in the letter to Mayor Jim Watson that the Ontario government continues to support the the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.'s recommendation of developing only one zone and one site in the Ottawa area.
In response, Watson sent a letter to city council Monday ahead of the finance and economic development meeting, saying a motion the committee was to consider on a separate gaming zone is "largely superseded by the province's decision."
Watson wanted to keep Rideau Carleton Raceway while holding an open competition for another casino, to be built in a separate location and run by a private operator. (The Canadian Press, 1310 News)
