Michael MacMillan knows what people mean when they insist that Canada's digital landscape is breaking boundaries. There is no doubt that the country's digital space is undergoing disruptive change. It's just that as CEO of Blue Ant Media and a veteran of the space, he's seen it before.
"The one thing about the online digital world is that borders continue to blur, but they've been blurring for a long time," he said. "This is not the first wave of technological innovation and disruption that's happened. We've seen it successively over decades."
However, he adds, this time around, Canadian businesses must cast their eyes beyond Canadian boundaries . The odd challenge facing Canadians he says, is that the conventional media space is unbelievably concentrated in this country and that makes it difficult for new players, with new ideas to thrive.
Environments that thrive, do so because of the addition of many players and entrepreneurs, MacMillan says. In Canada, this is difficult because of the larger dominant players.
