Canadian Forces change name of New Brunswick base in bid to restore tradition

OROMOCTO, N.B. - The largest military training facility in Eastern Canada has a new name.

Canadian Forces Base Gagetown in New Brunswick is now known as 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown, with its parent command organization now 5th Canadian Division Support Group.

Brig.-Gen. Nicolas Eldaoud said at a ceremony Tuesday that the name change is part of a wider effort to restore the Canadian Army's traditions.

The federal government announced initiatives last month to bring back divisional nomenclature across the country.

The changes are part of a phased approach that began in August 2011, when the historical name of the Canadian Army was restored.
