After selling some 500 million of them in the U.S. in the space of about a year, Taco Bell has announced it’s bringing its Doritos Locos Tacos to Canada.
And it’s launching the program with an ad campaign that takes a jab at skeptics who thought the decadent product would never come north of the border.
The cross-branded product features Taco Bell tacos inside shells made from Dorito chips, and observers in the U.S. have hailed it as an exceptionally successful new product launch.

The New Doritos Loco Taco Flavor
For the Canadian launch, Toronto ad agency Grip Limited etched onto the side of taco shells Canadians’ angry and frustrated tweets about the lack of Doritos Locos Tacos north of the border. They then invited some of those tweeters to a “special fan event” where they got to -- quite literally -- eat their words, AdWeek reports.
The result is the video ad posted above and an ad campaign that blogger Peter Nowak described as “effective because it shows that Taco Bell savvy with the Twitter kids,” while at the same time highlighting the demand for the product in Canada.
"Doritos Locos Tacos has been the number one talked about topic on our Facebook page for over a year," Taco Bell Canada chief marketing office David Vivenes said in a statement.
The Doritos Locos Taco will debut in Canadian locations on Labour Day, September 2, and will be available “while supplies last.” Prices start at $1.49 for a regular Doritos Locos Taco and $1.99 for a Doritos Locos Taco Supreme.
But even as Canada finally gets Doritos Locos Tacos, in the U.S. the cross-branding campaign is already speeding ahead to its next launch: The seriously meta Doritos Locos Doritos -- i.e. Doritos chips flavoured like Taco Bell tacos made with Doritos chips. Wrap your head around that one.
