Jeanne Beker to be honoured at inaugural Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards

TORONTO - Longtime fashion and media maven Jeanne Beker will be honoured at the first-ever Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards.

The Fashion Television Channel host has been named as the recipient of a benchmark career award at the inaugural gala early next year.

Beker will be presented the honour by Joe Fresh creative director Joe Mimran, who has been named honorary chair of the event.

Beker was host of "Fashion Television" for 27 years before the groundbreaking style series was cancelled last year. But she's maintained an active presence since with several endeavours including her work with the Fashion Television Channel and as creative director of her own fashion line, Edit by Jeanne Beker, which launched in 2010.

Beker's previous design credits include a limited time only clothing line for Eaton’s in 2001 and a line of bodywear sold at Sears Canada in the fall of 2003.

"We are honoured to be presenting Jeanne with a special achievement award to recognize and celebrate her work in the fashion industry. She is a wonderful advocate and ambassador for fashion in Canada," CAFA managing director Vicky Milner said in a statement Thursday.

Billed as the first event of its kind in Canada, the CAFA gala will feature 10 award categories honouring homegrown talent within the fashion industry.

Nominees are slated to be announced at a special ceremony in October, and winners will be selected through a confidential vote by the CAFA jury next January.

The Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards gala is scheduled to take place on Feb. 1, 2014 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
