Student leaders continue to make headlines this week after former Mount Royal University student union president Meghan Melnyk was sentenced to jail for her role in an attempted bank robbery.
Melnyk, 29, pleaded guilty Monday to the 2012 robbery of a Servus Credit Union in southeast Calgary and stealing $6,200 to feed her gambling addiction.
According to the Calgary Sun, Judge Anne Brown sentenced Melnyk to 18 months jail time as well as three years of probation, requiring her to fulfill 240 hours of community service and undergo counselling.
CTV News reports she was also ordered to provide a DNA sample, abstain from alcohol and drugs and is prohibited from possessing a weapon for 10 years.
“There was a threat of a weapon,” the Calgary Herald reports Brown saying during her verdict.
“There was the planned and deliberate nature of the offence, including disguising yourself."
Melnyk, a former communications student at MRU, entered the bank last August and handed the teller a note demanding money and indicating she had a weapon.
She was later arrested after a police helicopter tracked her down.
Melynk joins other student leaders in the news this week after the president of the Saint Mary's University students' association in Halifax, N.S. resigned following a scandal over an offensive frosh-week chant.
Jared Perry issued a statement last Friday saying he would step down after a video was posted to Instagram of frosh leaders doing a cheer that condones non-consensual sex with underage girls.
According to the National Post, two other unnamed student organizers also face possible disciplinary action.
SMU spokesman Steve Proctor told the National Post the school received a complaint that student organizers violated the student code of conduct.
On the opposing coast, student leaders at UBC resigned after reports surfaced that a similar chant to the one that caused outrage at SMU was also being sung during frosh week in that campus, the Vancouver Province reported.
Students at UBC were told to keep the chant private.
