Larry McMurter Impaired Driving: Edmonton Man Charged After Elderly Woman Killed In Crash

Accused Drunk Driver Hits Car Full Of Seniors In Fatal Crash

One elderly woman is dead and another in serious condition after their small sedan was hit by a pickup driven by an alleged drunk driver, police say.

The crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Whitemud Drive and 215 Street in Edmonton.

The Edmonton Police Service said the 72-year-old woman killed in the crash was travelling in a Toyota Corolla with another woman and two men -- all in their 70s -- when the collision occurred.

Both women were taken to hospital in serious condition. One of the women died en route, while the other remains in critical condition in hospital, according to police. The two men suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were also taken to hospital.

Investigators say the area of the crash had just suffered a power outage. Police are now investigating if street lights or traffic lights operation at the intersection were affected by the outage.

Larry McMurter, 63, the driver of the Ford, is charged with impaired operation causing death and refusing to provide a breath sample. Additional criminal charges are pending, police said.
