Kate Middleton and Prince William have finally introduced Prince George to his great-grandfather, the last senior royal to meet the future king.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took their infant son to meet Prince Philip, a.k.a. the Duke of Edinburgh, over the weekend at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, according to the Daily Mirror.
“He has been desperate to meet his great-grandson and having the family together is really special for him,” a source said.
During all the excitement over Prince George’s birth, Prince Philip, 92, was recovering from an operation at the Royal Family’s Sandringham estate.
The vacation — Will and Kate’s first since their son’s birth — also offers a rather significant photo opportunity, according to the Daily Mail; it’s the first time since Queen Victoria’s reign that three generations of royal heirs will be featured in the same snapshot.

“Everyone has been waiting for this photo to be taken,” a “royal insider” told the Daily Mail. “It’s wonderful that the family have finally got together.”
The visit comes during what the Mirror’s source called a “very busy time for the Duke and Duchess.” Will and Kate have spent the last two months adjusting to parenthood.
Prince Will is wrapping up his work in the Royal Air Force and will relocate with Kate and George to their official royal residence at Kensington Palace. He spent the last three years as a search and rescue pilot on Anglesey. (Those who want to get a taste of Will and Kate’s life there might consider renting the cottage where the royals stayed).
Meanwhile, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge is returning to her royal duties; she most recently accompanied Will to the Tusk Conservation Awards.
