A chilling audio recording has emerged from the scene of a deadly crash between an Ottawa city bus and Via Rail train on Wednesday.
“We’re receiving a lot of calls on this one,” one dispatcher is heard saying.
“We have a double-decker bus. Front end of the bus has significant damage,” responds a paramedic, describing details from the scene. Later he asks the dispatcher to “upgrade this to a mass casualty.”
“I have about six code blacks.”
Earlier on Wednesday, a passenger train and OC Transpo double-decker bus collided east of Fallowfield station shortly before 9 a.m. – killing six people, including the bus driver, injuring many others.
OC Transpo officials issued a statement on their website, addressing the fatal crash.
“We are devastated by today’s tragic collision in Barrhaven. Our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to the victims, their families and all those affected.”
An investigation has been launched by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB). According to the TSB, eleven investigators were dispatched to the scene and a report is not expected for several months, according to a senior board official.
