WHL Roundup: Bartosak makes 32 saves as Red Deer Rebels double up Kootenay Ice

CRANBROOK, B.C. - Patrik Bartosak stopped 32 shots as the Red Deer Rebels doubled up the host Kootenay Ice 4-2 on Friday in Western Hockey League play.

The 20-year-old improved his career record to 6-2-1 against Kootenay to go along with a 2.13 goals-against average and .922 save percentage.

Adam Musil and Grayson Pawlenchuk had a goal and an assist apiece for the Rebels (1-0-0), who overcame a 2-1 score by finding the back of the net three times in the third period, while Haydn Fleury and Lukas Sutter had the others.

Jagger Dirk and Sam Reinhart each scored for the Ice (0-1-0) as Mackenzie Skapski turned aside 38 shots in a losing cause.

Reinhart opened the scoring 3:54 into the game to give Kootenay a 1-0 lead.

Fleury responded for Red Deer less than two minutes later, however Dirk scored at 9:19 to give the Ice a one-goal edge after 20 minutes of play.

Kootenay looked to extend its lead in the second period, but Bartosak kept his squad in the game by stopping all eleven shots he faced.

Dirk tied the game just 34 seconds into third period and Musil gave the Rebels their first lead of the game only six seconds later.

Sutter put the game away with a power-play goal at the nine-minute mark.

Red Deer went 1 for 5 on the power play while Kootenay failed to score on three chances with the man advantage.


Wheat Kings 6 Warriors 3

MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Taylor Cooper scored three times and Jens Meiller had a goal and two assists as Brandon doubled up the Warriors.

Richard Nejezchleb and Ryley Lindgren also scored for the Wheat Kings (1-0-0) as Curtis Honey stopped 36 shots for the win.

Brandon Potomak, Brayden Point and Jack Rodewald supplied the offence for Moose Jaw (0-1-0) as Justin Paulic made 27 saves in a losing cause.


Raiders 6 Blades 1

SASKATOON— Cole Cheveldave made 35 saves and Jayden Hart scored twice as Prince Albert defeated the Blades.

Mike Winther had a goal and two assists for the Raiders (1-0-0) while Dakota Conroy, Reid Gardiner and Gage Quinney each scored once.

Collin Valcourt scored the lone goal for Saskatoon (0-1-0) and Alex Moodie picked up the loss after allowing six goals on 26 shots through 40 minutes of action. Troy Trombley replaced Moodie to start the third and stopped all 12 shots he faced in relief.


Oil Kings 7 Hitmen 3

EDMONTON, — The Oil Kings scored five times on 10 power-play opportunities en route to crushing Calgary.

Cody Corbett scored twice for Edmonton (1-0-0) while Ashton Sautner, Henrik Samuelsson, Brett Pollock and Aaron Irving each had a goal and two assists.

Mitchell Moroz added a single goal to round out the offence for the Oil Kings as Tristan Jarry made 27 saves for the win.

Greg Chase had two goals for the Hitmen (0-1-0) as Jake Virtanen found the back of the net once.

Chris Driedger picked up the loss after allowing six goals on 26 shots through 32 minutes of action. Mack Shields replaced Driedger and stopped 11-of-12 shots.


Tigers 6 Hurricanes 1

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Cole Sanford scored twice and Trevor Cox had three assists as Medicine Hat downed the Hurricanes.

Ty Stanton, Steven Owre, Curtis Valk and Boston Leier also scored for the Tigers (1-0-0) as Marek Langhamer made 21 saves for the win.

Jamal Watson scored the lone goal for Lethbridge (0-1-0) while Jonny Hogue turned away 32 shots.


Rockets 5 Blazers 2

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Rourke Chartier scored two goals and set up one more as Kelowna beat the Blazers.

Jordon Cooke made 27 saves for the victory while Riley Stadel, Austin Glover and Justin Kirkland rounded out the Rockets' (1-0-0) offence with a goal apiece.

Joe Kornelson and Cole Ully scored for Kamloops (0-1-0) as Taran Kozun stopped 29-of-33 shots in net.


Winterhawks 9 Cougars 2

PORTLAND, Ore. — Oliver Bjorkstrand scored once and set up four more as the Winterhawks crushed Prince George.

Chase De Leo and Presten Kopeck each had two goals and an assist for Portland (1-0-0) while Nicolas Petan scored once and tacked on three assists.

Layne Viveiros and Garrett Haar and Anton Cederholm rounded out the offence for the Winterhawks as Brendan Burke stopped 29 shots for the win.

Klarc Wilson and Brad Morrison scored for the Cougars (0-1-0). Brett Zarowny took the loss after allowing six goals on 27 shots through 40 minutes of action. Ty Edmonds started the third period in net for Prince George and turned away 9-of-12 shots faced in relief.


Royals 4 Giants 2

VANCOUVER, — Austin Carroll scored three times and Logan Nelson assisted on all four of his club's goals as Victoria doubled up the Giants.

Brandon Magee had a goal and an assist for the Royals (1-0-0) while Patrick Polivka made 34 saves for the win.

Tyler Morrison and Anthony Ast scored for Vancouver (0-1-0) as Payton Lee stopped 19 shots in defeat.
