An Edmonton nurse has been charged in connection to trafficking illegal steroids on a military base.

Helene Bouchard, a nurse at the 3rd Canadian Division Support Base in Edmonton, was arrested on Thursday and is charged with four counts of trafficking of a controlled substance.

The charges were laid after an investigation conducted by the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service and National Drug Enforcement Team.

"With our national approach to drug enforcement, we assist commanders in maintaining high standards of conduct and discipline. It also sends a clear message that illicit drug use will not be tolerated in the Department of National Defence," said Lieutenant Colonel Brian Frei in a statement on Friday.

Bouchard was released from custody is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 6.
