The discovery was made in a mail processing centre in Montreal, when border services agents inspected a package coming from Turkey.
The package was destined for a Winnipeg residence, but Montreal border service agents suspected something was up when they opened the package and found a large, wooden-framed picture.
When officers opened the frame they found about 800 grams of opium inside. After a call to RCMP in Winnipeg, two suspects were tracked down and arrested.
Now, a 45-year-old woman from Winnipeg and a 47-year-old man from Burnaby, B.C., are facing multiple charges including the importation of opium and conspiracy to traffic opium.
RCMP said though the package was addressed to a Winnipeg residence, investigators don’t believe it was the package’s final destination.
Officers continue to investigate and are now looking into whether or not the drugs are linked to an organized crime.
