Barcelona's legendary Sagrada Família basilica has been under construction since 1882 and finally the end is in sight.
When completed in 2026, long-dead architect Antoni Gaudí's crowning achievement will look pretty much exactly like a massive alien spaceship constructed completely out of stone. At least, that's what we see in a video released on the basilica's YouTube channel Wednesday.
The project has faced innumerable setbacks over the years, including a devastating fire in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War that left most of Gaudí's plans for the building destroyed. Architects and builders have been painstakingly working to recreate the Catalan hero's vision ever since.
Gaudí' used to joke that his client, God, was in no hurry to see the church completed. So while current architect Jordi Faulí says the world will have its masterpiece in 2026, we suggest holding off on buying any plane tickets.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story identified Sagrada Família as a cathedral. It is a basilica.
