Grocery Innovations Canada trade show wraps up with top 10 products for 2013

TORONTO - Bubble gum-flavoured icing, protein tea and refillable pods for coffee makers are among the items on a top 10 list compiled by delegates at a recent grocery trade show.

Members of the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers tested and reviewed hundreds of new products to come up with the list that might appeal to shoppers.

"Every year we are blown away by the quality of product that makes it out to the show and this year was no exception," Tom Barlow, president and CEO of the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers, a non-profit trade association representing more than 4,000 grocery retailers from across Canada, said Tuesday in a release.

"From customizable frosting to shopping bags to windshield washing fluids, the areas of innovation are endless."

The products were evaluated at the Toronto event based on three criteria: most unique, most buzz-worthy and best consumer response.

Here are the top 10 innovations as decided by the grocers for 2013 (in no particular order):

— Astro Kik is a gelatin-free yogurt drink designed to give kids energy.

— Happy Water is a blend of pure natural spring water plus water containing lithia salts from British Columbia.

— Blu-Dot Protein Tea: Natural ingredients like New Zealand whey protein and prebiotic dietary fibre are in this protein tea. It contains no artificial flavours or sweeteners.

— Duncan Hines Frosting Creations: The easy-to-stir icing starter base is ready to flavour. It's available in 16 flavours, including caramel, white chocolate raspberry and bubble gum.

— Duhaime Deluxe: The natural fruit-based chutneys are sweetened with organic sugar and maple syrup. They can be served over warmed cheese with rustic bread and topped with parsley and walnuts.

— Kienna Coffee Roasters: Consumers can now use biodegradable and reusable coffee pods with their Keurig k-cup coffee brewer. The KiennaCup pods are BPA-free and made in Canada.

— Bao Smoothies with Baobab Superfruit: The organic fruit pulp used in the smoothies is not pasteurized, heat-extracted, freeze-dried or concentrated.

— Aliments MSU Foods: Jet X Pert windshield washer fluid from Romania can handle up to -45 C weather and comes in a collapsible and recyclable bag.

— N'Take shopping bags are reusable, responsibly manufactured, durable and can be customized.

— Gay Lea's Spreadables Cinnamon & Brown Sugar can be spread immediately after being taken out of the fridge.
