Canada's Milos Raonic advances at Japan Open with win over Jeremy Chardy

TOKYO - Third-seeded Milos Raonic overpowered Jeremy Chardy of France 6-4, 6-3 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Japan Open.

Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., had defeated Japan's Go Soeda 6-4, 7-6 (0) on Wednesday in the first round as he tries to finish the ATP Tour season on a high note.

The Canadian pro, who captured the Thailand Open on Sunday, hit 17 aces against Chardy in a match that lasted just over an hour and 16 minutes.

Raonic will next face Slovakian Lukas Lacko, who beat qualifier Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France 7-5, 6-4.

In other matches, sixth-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Horacio Zeballos of Argentina.

Defending champion and local favourite Kei Nishikori will face Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in a second-round match later Thursday.

Raonic is a provisional 11th in the race to the eight-man season wrapup in London next month and is working in Asia to try to qualify for the elite event for the first time.

Raonic improved to 39-17 on the season with the victory.
