According to CTV News, nearly 8,500 workers at 28 Superstore locations in Alberta walked off the job at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.
The union representing the striking workers, UFCW Local 401, has been unable to come to any sort of agreement with Superstore parent company, Loblaws.
"They are still refusing to put hours in to the Superstores for their workers, in order to ensure not only can they get a paycheck and put food on their own tables, but ensure the stores are safe and clean for consumers," UFCW 401 spokesperson Christine McMeckan told 660 News.
"Barring any sort of miracle where the employer comes back and just basically gives us everything on the critical manners that we need, we just don't see how we can avoid a picket line," she continued to the Calgary Herald.
She also told Global News employees have voiced concerns over food safety, saying Superstore managers are allowing products to expire on the shelves.
Global reports all affected stores remain open during the strike, and will be staffed by managers, but the union is hopeful customers will choose to shop elsewhere.
