Edmonton police dog fatally stabbed in chase

An Edmonton police dog died this morning after it was stabbed during a police pursuit.

"Very sad day for the EPS," Const. Brendan Power said in a tweet Monday. "Lost PSD Quanto. That dog loved to work and we loved having him back us up."

Police were chasing a suspect in the area of 111th Avenue and 109th Street after pulling over a stolen vehicle near 97th street and 118th Avenue early Monday.

A person from that vehicle stabbed the dog, a five-year-old named Quanto, police said.

The handler took the dog to an emergency veterinarian clinic where it later died.

Police have a suspect in custody, but no charges have been laid.

"It's a tragic day here at the EPS," said spokesperson Scott Pattison. "I was out training with that dog team earlier this year. That bond between ... handlers and their dogs is extremely tight.

"Those dogs go home with the members and they're part of their own families.

"I know the member, [Const.] Matt Williamson, and the dog, Quanto, are best buds."
