Vancouver police confirm a fiery crash on Oak Street near 53rd Avenue Monday did not, as was previously suspected, involve a mobile meth lab. According to a press release, it was gasoline, not equipment and chemicals from a meth lab, that was involved in the fire.
A YouTube video posted by user farmerbrown shows the blaze and thick plume of black smoke as passersby look on.
According to police, the white panel van struck another vehicle on Oak Street near 53rd Avenue, crashed into a concrete wall and caught fire. Two passengers of the second vehicle were taken to hospital with minor injuries, while the two men from the van fled the scene. A police dog was brought on to help locate the two suspects, states the release.
Global News reports that Oak Street has been closed down between 52nd and 57th Avenues. Police are asking commuters to avoid the area, CBC News reports.
Residents in the immediate area have been evacuated and the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services Hazmat team is on the scene.
