The cable operator says it will add those channels, as well as DIY, Travel Channel and Cooking Channel to its TWC TV app. That brings the channels available to watch on the mobile app to 12 nationwide.
The deal could help Time Warner Cable Inc. hold on to its pay TV customers as it adds more features without adding to their monthly bill. And content provider Scripps Networks Interactive Inc. may benefit in the future if more viewers helps boost its ad revenue.
The New York-based cable operator has said its customers used the app nearly 5 million times in June, double the number a year ago.
Most app usage still occurs in the home, but the cable operator is adding to its on-the-go viewing lineup to bolster its "TV Everywhere" offerings, said Mike Angus, Time Warner Cable's senior vice-president and general manager of video.
"TV Everywhere" is an industry initiative to tie viewing on mobile devices and computers to a traditional pay TV subscription. It is a way to compete with online video services like Netflix while not harming the traditional pay TV business.
Knoxville, Tenn.-based Scripps cut a similar deal to allow viewing of its channels on Verizon's FiOS Mobile app last month.
Scripps spokesman Mark Kroeger said the company plans to ink similar deals with other TV distributors going forward.
