EDMONTON - Air Canada (TSX:AC.A) says it will not operate non-stop flights between Edmonton and London’s Heathrow Airport this winter.
The airline says in a statement that the direct flights will be shut down between Jan. 8 and March 28, 2014.
The flights will resume March 29 with five flights each week, then switch to daily direct trips throughout the summer beginning May 1.
Air Canada says that since the flights were introduced about six years ago, the Edmonton-London route has not been profitable over the winter.
Brad Ferguson, with the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, says the winter cancellation is a setback for the business community.
Ferguson says there's a need for direct access, great service and choice in direct flights — not just to London but around the world.
