Vancouver musician Dan Mangan will don a wet suit today and dive deep into the waters of Howe Sound.
The indie darling is joining the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) on a two-day expedition to explore the ancient glass sponge reefs off B.C.'s coast. The reefs are unique to the region and provide an important habitat for many fish. They also work as a natural water filter.
The Juno-winning singer took to Twitter to announce his big splash. "I'll say hey to James Cameron for everyone," he tweeted.
CPAWS is calling for immediate fishing closures and the establishment of protected marine areas in the Strait of Georgia to protect the reefs. Mangan, a team of scientists, global explorer Bruce Kirkby and B.C. minister of technology, Andrew Wilkinson, will all be hitting the depths to monitor the current state of the reef.
“We are excited that Dan Mangan and our other special guests are able to join us on this important expedition,” CPAWS Oceans Program Director Sabine Jessen stated in a press release. “It shows that people care about the health of B.C.’s coastal waters and that there is support for protecting our marine ecosystems.”
