University of Windsor student killed in weekend stabbing

Windsor police are probing the death of a local university student, who was slain during a weekend melee that saw at least five other people stabbed.

According to police, two groups of males became involved in an altercation in the Pelissier Street and University Avenue area about 2 a.m. on Saturday.

The incident left one man dead, while five others were wounded.

Police have since identified the deceased as Gautham (Kevin) Kugathasan, 19, a University of Windsor student whose family lives in Scarborough.

An autopsy was scheduled to take place Sunday.

Police say they are still investigating and expect to lay charges “in the near future,” after detectives review video they have obtained.

Investigators would like to speak with anyone with information about the incident.
