Edmonton Muncipal Election: Twitter Reacts To Race's End

Edmonton Reacts To New Council
Dave Onishenko

Most of the votes weren't even in yet.

But the lead posted by Edmonton mayoral candidate Don Iveson was so vast that it only took a few minutes after the polls closed at 8 p.m. for him to be declared the city's next mayor.

And before even that happened, well-wishes and celebratory posts clogged up Edmonton's Twitter feeds and even had @doniveson trending in the social media network.

One couldn't swing a tweet without hitting a compliment or vote of confidence for the new mayor.

But there were also those who admired Iveson's "adorable baby," as well as those who were thrilled that the former councillor's victory went hand in hand with a 30 per cent jump in voter turn out.

Commentators also brought up the new mayor's tender age, as well as the man's progressive leanings.
