Mike Duffy Speech Reaction Fuels Speculation Senate Scandal Will Bring Down Harper (TWEETS)

TWITTER REACTION: Will Duffy Topple Harper?
CP

Turns out nobody puts Duffy in the corner.

Not even Stephen Harper.

Sen. Mike Duffy delivered a bombshell speech addressed to his Senate colleagues on Tuesday, giving the public his version of events related to a growing expense scandal that has ensnared the red chamber, Harper-appointed senators, and PMO.

The allegations Duffy made in his speech directly challenge Harper’s effort to distance himself in the scandal: that his former chief of staff Nigel Wright acted alone in issuing Duffy a $90,000 cheque to repay expenses.

“It's not about what you did; it's about the perception of what you did that has been created in the media,” said Duffy of what he was told by the PMO. “The rules are inexplicable to our base. I argued: I'm just following the rules like all of the others. But it didn't work. I was ordered by the Prime Minister: Pay the money back, end of discussion.”

Duffy also expressed disappointment in a proposal to suspend him and senators Pamela Wallin, Patrick Brazeau, slamming the motion as undemocratic.

“This motion is something one might expect to see in Iraq or Iran or in Vladimir Putin's Russia, but not in democratic Canada. It is not, I repeat, it is not fundamental justice,” said Duffy. “Mr. Diefenbaker and Mr. Trudeau, were they here today, would be mortified.”

Some political pundits and Twitter users were left gobsmacked while others hoisted the embattled senator to Canadian patriot status, prompting some to speculate the Senate blowback will bring down Harper.
