At a news conference Friday, police gave details about their investigation into the Sept. 30 altercation outside a Spadina Avenue restaurant that left 22-year-old Danny La with severe head injuries and eventually resulted in his death.
Toronto Police Det. Sgt. Pauline Grey said La and another man, who police would not identify, were assaulted by a group of four or five men as they stood outside a restaurant at 349 Spadina Ave.
During the altercation the men ended up on the ground where they suffered repeated blows to the head with a weapon. Both were sent to hospital in critical condition. La was placed on life support before being pronounced dead on Sunday. The other man remains in hospital but police will not release any information about his condition.
Police say the roots of the "vicious assault" began earlier when the two victims, along with three of their friend,s got into an altercation with a larger group of young men near the Uniun nightclub, located at 473 Adelaide Ave.
"People who were leaving the nightclub would have seen that altercation," said Gray.
Police say all the men involved are Asian males between the ages of 22 to 25.
Police have assigned to the case a detective who speaks Mandarin and Cantonese. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
