Hundreds protest Fraser River coal facility

More than 300 people showed up to rally in New Westminster on Sunday to try to convince Port Metro Vancouver coal expansion is a bad idea.

Residents along the Fraser River — in White Rock, Delta, Surrey and New Westminster — are most worried about the coal dust they say will be produced by an expanded facility along the river.

The expansion would see U.S. coal shipped by rail to the Fraser Surrey Docks, then by barge down the Fraser, before being shipped to Asia.

Fraser Surrey Docks has assured the public their production facilities will make sure the particles stay out of the air and have started an environmental assessment to evaluate the risks.

Port Metro Vancouver will ultimately make the decision on the proposed expansion following the assessment.
