Marco Lavoie, 44, set out for a two-month long canoe trip on July 16, but after three months without word his family decided to contact police.
Quebec provincial police said Lavoie, who is now recovering in hospital, ran into trouble when a bear wandered into his campsite, ate his food and damaged his survival equipment.
Sûreté du Québec Sgt. Gregory Gomez del Prado said when they found Lavoie, he was dehydrated and had lost a lot of weight.
“We rescued the man who was in critical condition at that point. He was suffering from hypothermia,” he said.
A search team had been sent out about 10 days ago, but bad weather forced them to suspend their operation.
Yesterday, police continued the search with the help of a helicopter and that’s when they were able to track down Lavoie about halfway between the northern communities of Matagami and Waskaganish.
