Diwali In Vancouver: Celebrate The Festival Of Lights (VIDEO)

Happy Diwali!

Vancouver is set to light up in bright colours as city residents celebrate Diwali, the Indian "festival of lights".

Festivities opened Tuesday with Diwali Fest (running until Nov.8) as Hindus, Jains and Sikhs celebrate the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and prosperity over poverty.

Events include workshops in which artists teach participants how to design rangoli, traditional Indian art with bright, colourful patterns that are placed on floors near home entrances to welcome guests.

Attendees will also learn how to paint diyas (traditional lamps), hands and have the opportunity to try Bollywood dancing.

A large downtown event, Nov. 2, with music and dance performances, includes Shiamak Davar's Bollywood dance team, run by the choreographer for last April's Times of India Film Awards.

An Indian bazaar and a room-sized rangoli will feature at the Roundhouse Community Centre that day from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The festival concludes with Chai House cabaret, featuring Juno Award-winning soul singer Chin Injeti, Punjabi rock band NaQsh, and DJ A-SLAM at the Surrey Arts Centre on Nov. 8 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
