One of the biggest surprises at the inaugural YouTube Music Awards on Sunday was that an unknown group (to North Americans) beat out Justin Bieber for one of the biggest awards of the evening.
Girls' Generation, a K-Pop all-girls group, took home the award for Video of the Year for "I Got A Boy" and instantly became a trending topic (and a target for racist comments) thanks to their relative obscurity in the West.
But the Korean-based group, which has almost 1 million followers on Twitter and more than 5 million likes on Facebook, is one of the most popular K-Pop bands with a rabid fanbase that rivals the Bieliebers.
Susan Kang, who runs Korean pop culture site Soompi.com, says that Girls' Generation fans call themselves "Sones" - pronounced "So-Ones" - which is a play off the Korean word for "wish" from the band's hit song "Genie."
The best-selling group have been together since 2007 and consist of members Taeyeon, Jessica, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun.
The women also have typical K-pop style (which is a bit different from Korean fashion), consisting of bright colours and wild prints, high kicks, cute bunny hats, lots of hearts, wavy hair à la Kate Middleton and tons of bubble-gum pink accessories. Think of them as Gwen Stefani x 1000.
