A prestigious $50,000 photography prize has been awarded to a Kelowna artist.
Erin Shirreff's work combines videos and photographs to create pieces that explore spatial dimension, the act of looking, and the connections between stillness and motion. Her long videos, constructed from hundreds of photographs, recently won her the Aimia AGO Photography Prize.
The Prize is Canada's largest photography award, according to its website, and one of the world's largest arts and culture prize programs. Shortlisted by a jury, Shirreff beat out three other international artists to capture the award, receiving the most online votes.
Shirreff was humbled by the win, telling The Vancouver Sun that it was "deeply unexpected."
Her work is in the collections of New York City's Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Houston's Museum of Fine Arts, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, to name a few.
She currently lives in New York City.
